Great Ape Enclosure Design Tool launched by University of Birmingham

2nd October 2017

In connection with our work at Twycross Zoo, Associate Partner Stuart Curran was invited to sit on a multi-disciplinary advisory board to assist the School of Biosciences at the University of Birmingham in their work to develop an Enclosure Design Tool.

The EDT takes the form of an interactive, computer interface that gives zoos and sanctuaries the ability to compare the behaviour of their great apes to the latest research on wild populations. The information is then used to create physically and mentally stimulating enclosures that mimic the physical and mechanical challenges wild great apes face in the forest canopy. It is hoped that this will further influence the design of zoo habitats in order to provide exemplary accommodation for all great ape species.
