Weedon Architects have worked alongside the Zoo to create a design for Chimpanzee Eden which provides a larger, more complex space for the chimps to interact together
This 3000m² multi-storey home has been purposely designed to replicate a wild environment and provides outstanding facilities for both animal welfare, research, education and visitors alike.
The new facility is designed to pose the same kind of challenges wild chimps face in their daily lives and far more suited to their care needs.
The University of Birmingham collaborated with the design team to develop an Enclosure Design Tool, with a science-based design for chimpanzees, using elements which mimic the physical and mental challenges they face in their natural environment.
The themed landscaped interior gives visitors an immersive educational jungle experience.
