The Lighterman Pavilion, King's Cross

London

Located by Regent’s Canal, The Lighterman is a three storey restaurant and bar with a viewing terrace which opens out onto Granary Square.

Conceived by Stanton Williams as a single sculptural form embedded into its context, The Lighterman Pavilion acts as a bridgehead that defines and anchors the south-eastern edge of Granary Square.

The building is a contemporary addition to the historic location, complementing the area’s industrial heritage. The grey linear brick façade designed to create a dialogue with the character and tonal palette of the nearby Granary Building and surrounding Victorian architecture. Exposed glass and steel and robust detailing continue the industrial theme of the exterior.

The Lighterman plays a key role in linking the canal towpath to Granary Square. The form and location helps to increase pedestrian connectivity, creating more activity in Granary Square.

Weedon Architects acted as Executive Architects to complete the Stanton Williams concept design.
