2023 RIBA Learning Programme

18th July 2023

Weedon Architects were recently invited to participate in the 2023 RIBA Learning Programme, an initiative that aims to connect architectural practices with local schools across the UK, fostering knowledge about the role of architects and the journey to becoming one.

Our team, represented by Alex and Phoebe, had the pleasure of engaging with Year 9 students at Archbishop Ilsley School in Acocks Green. Through a series of workshops, we introduced the students to the diverse responsibilities of an architect and showcased the projects we work on.  We also organized hands-on sessions to help the students develop their ideas for the school's summer term project: designing an Eco Home.

Throughout multiple sessions, we guided the students in brainstorming design ideas, with a particular focus on sustainable materials. We also provided support for their hand drawings and modelling exercises. The highlight came during the third and final session when, with the support of Phoebe and Alex, the students witnessed their designs come to life in a day-long model-making workshop.

To celebrate their hard work and creativity, we presented awards at the end of the workshop. The accolades included prizes for the best building, best teamwork, and best overall design. It was inspiring to see the students' designs materialize and witness their enthusiasm for architecture flourish.

We are grateful to have been part of such a rewarding experience, and we look forward to continuing our commitment to education and nurturing young talent in the field of architecture.
